Holden's Gallery is not only a beautiful gift shop and impressive art gallery; it also offers a wonderful picture framing service favoured by both artists and decorators alike.

Phil and Jennifer have been in the framing business for many years (Phil has been framing for 40 years, Jennifer has been framing for 10) and their experience and expertise shows immediately upon visiting them, artwork in hand, looking for the "perfect" frame.

With a series of quick questions they can establish the type of frame that will compliment your artwork best as well as any other extras that will help your piece look amazing, including non reflective glass, spacers and more. If you are unsure about the type of design for your frame or what colour mat board to go with, Jennifer and Phil’s eye for detail and colour will help create a piece that will not only look fantastic but will meet your criteria for its use and placement.

Holden’s Gallery also offers a range of readymade frames and mat boards for the DIY enthusiast. Also keep an eye out for their beautiful, rustic wooden frames. They are just begging for a family portrait or a landscape painting and they will definitely draw plenty of admiring glances!

So whether you are looking to frame an expensive canvas artwork or a priceless children’s painting Phil, Jennifer and their staff should be your first port of call. No piece is too big or too small for this wonderful team and they produce masterpiece after masterpiece for their clients.

If Maleny were big enough to have a variety of ‘precincts’ – in the way that larger towns or cities do – then Holden’s Gallery could be at the heart of a small upper Coral Street collection of boutique shops and businesses that have a sort of synergy about them.

Holden’s itself has an eclectic, but well-considered, collection of paintings, prints, jewellery and handcrafted gifts by local artists. It’s located next to Maleny Art Supplies. A few doors down is the wonderful slow food café, Pomadoras, and across the road is Mukti, now a national brand on the hair and skin care market. A handful of local businesses – massage therapists, web designers and business suppliers – have set up shop in the area.

The beauty of this very modest ensemble of businesses is that they all face the street – allowing for that common public interface that contemporary precincts really demand – and that together they offer that crucial collection of modern consumer preferences: dining, art works and supplies, giftware and a few essential services.

Holden’s – at the top of the street – is imposing in its historical, beautifully restored Queenslander. It’s also a well-established business that draws a core of local residents, making it an attractive anchor point for this end of Coral Street. And if it’s a gem in terms of its contribution to the streetscape, then it’s perhaps even more so inside, where original works by local artists Susanne Barrett, Tracey Sims and Gary Myers sit comfortably alongside handcrafted ceramics, books and cards.

Holden’s provides the visitor with a ‘something for everyone’ experience, while offering all the originality of a locally owned business.

Holden’s Gallery is a real hinterland treat. Slightly off the beaten Maple Street track, and committed to local artists and the community, it’s got an authenticity about it that makes you want to stay a while.

Located in what was Maleny’s oldest church – an historical blue and white timber building with tall ceilings and petite gothic windows – Holden’s showcases some of the region’s most impressive artists. Susanne Barrett’s oil landscapes contrast with her abstract multimedia, and Tracey Sims’ detailed acrylic and multimedia floral pieces have a mark of their own. Gary Myers’ colourful pieces are a delight.

Amazingly, Holden’s fits so much more than a fine collection of local paintings into its character-laden space. Antique furniture, handcrafted wood items, prints, sculptures, jewellery, books and cards sit comfortably alongside each other and provide something unexpected at every turn for the wandering visitor.

Part gallery, part gift shop, Holden’s also has a well-established picture framing service, and recently opened an on-the-spot photo lab. It’s a ‘something for everyone’ experience, but never feels cheap or cluttered. Those in charge would appear to have not only an eye for colour and arrangement, but also a respect for the space in which they find themselves. Anthea
